Welcome to the Living and Learning Center's Website!

The Living/Learning Community was established in Fall of 2003 as part of an initiative supported by a federal grant to the School of Nursing from the Department of Health and Human Services. It is a pilot program for UMKC and there are few such communities in nursing schools across country.  The three-year grant, which the School received in 2001, supports pilot initiatives to increase recruitment and retention in baccalaureate nursing programs and help combat the nursing shortage.  The intent of the Living/Learning Community is to provide social and academic support for nursing students by having them live, study and socialize together.

Goal: To provide an environment for nursing students that promotes transition and assimilation into the university and nursing student role. Living and learning students are provided access to critical university and school of nursing information where they live and on an ongoing basis. The living and learning environment promotes socialization with others from the same or similar degree concentrations and provides needed resources and support to optimize student success in the nursing program and at the university. 

The Living and Learning Center Provides Students With:

bulletContact with fellow students who are sharing your experiences on a daily basis.
bulletAn opportunity to form study groups in a convenient location with others who live near you and are in similar classes.
bulletA faculty liaison you can contact with questions and concerns before problems arise.
bulletExposure to faculty, staff, labs and clinical locations before you actually get to the school of nursing so you can already be familiar with what lies ahead.
bulletA monthly get together to discuss nursing issues and provide vital information that will ensure your success in the UMKC nursing program.
bulletAssignment of a student buddy or upper level student nurse mentor.
