Admission Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

This program requires 128 credit hours for graduation, including an internship.

High school graduates admitted into the nursing major should have completed a college preparatory curriculum that includes:

  • 4 units of English with two units emphasizing composition
  • 4 units of mathematics (at least through algebra II)
  • 3 units of social studies
  • 3 units of science with one being a laboratory course
  • 1 unit of fine arts
  • 2 units of foreign language.

Science courses recommended include biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology. To be considered for direct admission to the clnical major, high school students applying to UMKC for the first time must graduate in the upper 10% of their class and have a minimum ACT score of 27.

Transfer students with a minimum of 24 credit hours must have an overall grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for admission into pre-nursing.

Progression into the clinical major requires completion of a minimum of 36 hours of general education coursework including Chemistry with a lab, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology, College Algebra, N101 and A&S100 (transfer students with 24+ hours are not required to take A&S100). Applicants' nursing GPA must be a minimum of 2.75 for consideration.

Applicants must demonstrate evidence of attitudes, personal characteristics, and integrity that indicate high probability of successful completion of the degree and meeting criteria to take the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX).

 

RN-to-BSN

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for admission to the School of Nursing:

  • Graduation from a state board of nursing-approved school of nursing;
  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the United States and eligibility for licensure in Missouri; and
  • Cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 (4.0 scale) from the basic school of nursing and all previous/subsequent college coursework.

 

Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN)

  • B.S.N. from a college or university nationally recognized by a nursing accrediting agency or a B.S.N. from a program comparable to UMKC School of Nursing’s B.S.N. program.
  • Minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 for the last 60 hours of the B.S.N. program on a 4.0 scale.
  • Submission of a current resume.
  • The neonatal program has extra additional admission requirements. Please see the NNP page for these.
  • Current Missouri licensure and licensure in the state in which the student completes clinical requirements.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • Upper division or comparable statistics course with a minimum grade of B-. This course must be taken prior to N5555 Nursing Research: Evidence-based Practice.
  • A free standing health assessment course prior to enrolling in N5547 Diagnostic Reasoning/Advanced Assessment is required with a minimum grade of B-. Please note this does not apply to the NNP or Nurse Executive program applicants.

 

Doctoral (PhD)

Students may apply to the program as either post-B.S.N. or post-M.S.N. students. Applicants will be evaluated for Doctoral nursing studies according to the following criteria:

  • Grade point average;
  • Graduate Record Examination;
  • Three letters of reference; and
  • Interview and original essay by invitation.

 

Doctoral (DNP)
