Question: Will you transfer in all my credits from other institutions?

    Answer:
  • General Education courses that are part of the B.S.N. (bachelor of science in nursing) curriculum may transfer. Please visit the UMKC Course Equivalency website for more details. UMKC will take all courses you’ve completed if they are from accredited programs; however, courses not applicable to the nursing curriculum will not be factored into the nursing GPA used for application to the clinical major.
  • Any science prerequisites must be no more than 5 years old at the time you are accepted into the clinical major.
  • After being accepted into the clinical major, it will take a minimum of 3 years to complete the B.S.N. because there are three years of clinical coursework that must be taken in sequential order.

Question: Does completion of your program guarantee me licensure?

Answer: The State Board of Nursing may refuse to issue a license pursuant to Sections 335.011 to 335.096 for any one or any combination of causes stated in 335.066 subsection 2 of the State of Missouri Nursing Practice Act. The Missouri State Board of Nursing may refuse to issue a license for specific reasons related to moral turpitude, intemperate use of alcohol or drugs, or conviction of a crime. Application for licensure in the State of Missouri includes disclosure of criminal background, if any, and criminal background checks by the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Federal bureau of Investigation. Specific information may be obtained by contacting the Missouri State Board of Nursing. Completion of the B.S.N. program does not guarantee eligibility to write the licensure examination. Completion of the program guarantees the eligibility to apply to the State Board of Nursing to write the licensure examination.

Question: Can I work while obtaining my pre-licensure B.S.N. at UMKC?

    Answer:
  • Course work is generally Monday- Friday between the hours of 8-5+.
  • Clinical rotations will be Thursdays and/or Fridays for 8 or 12 hours. Students must also hold Wednesdays evenings after 4:00pm open for clinical preparation.
  • Summers are not included in the traditional curriculum although it’s strongly recommended that summers be used for completing general education courses.
  • In estimating time required for course work, it is a general rule that for each hour in class, 3 hours will be spent out of class (studying, reading, research, etc).
  • It is not recommended that students work more than 12 hours per week, which still may be difficult for some.
