Biography: Patricia J. Kelly, PhD, MPH, RN, FNP, has a joint appointment as a Professor for the Schools of Nursing and Medicine. She came to UMKC in 2004 as a visiting associate professor and research analyst and teaches in the graduate program at the School of Nursing. Prior to coming to Kansas City, she was an assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at the San Antonio School of Nursing. Dr. Kelly uses feminist and participatory action research methods to work with women in community settings around social/health issues including violence, depression, and sexually transmitted infections.

I worked as a women’s health activist before becoming a family nurse practitioner. My work with women with HIV infection in New York City led me to an interest in research that would help to make a difference in the lives of women and their families I continue to be excited by the ways in which nurses can use public health practices and ideas to influence patients’ lives beyond the exam room.
