M.S.N. Concentration: Nurse Educator

This on-line program provides a broad base of skills to prepare the graduate for the role of the nurse educator, whether in the community, staff development, or academia. UMKC School of Nursing will prepare nurse educators to employ cutting edge teaching strategies in the didactic and clinical setting, synthesize teaching-learning theories, and acquire skills in curriculum development. Clinical objectives include the student’s ability to provide didactic and clinical instruction within the academic setting. Hands on experience in writing objectives, teaching, clinical instructing, test writing and student management are offered through educational experiences provided by master educators. Completion of the program meets the educational requirements to be eligible for the NLN CNE Certification Exam.

Students are responsible for arranging their clinical preceptors and sites for the three NE clinical courses. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain clinical eligibility to practice during the program.

Admission Criteria into the Master’s Program are:

  • B.S.N. from an accredited nursing program
  • GPA of 3.2 or better in the last 60 hours of your B.S.N.
  • Submission of current resume or curricula vitae
  • Completion of an upper level Statistics course (300 or 400 level from a 4 year institution) with a grade of “B-“ or better.
  • Completion of a Health Assessment course as part of undergraduate coursework with a grade of “B-“or better.

    • Requires clinical preceptor and site for health assessment practice (a 3-4 day clinical time in Kansas City is required at the end of the semester)
  • N5564NE Education Clinical
    • Requires clinical preceptor and sites for acute care clinical practice, staff development clinical practice, and community nurse educator clinical practice
  • N5572NE Advanced Nursing Practice: Synthesis Practicum
    • Requires clinical preceptor and site for clinical instructing and didactic teaching.
