Research
Welcome to UMKC School of Nursing Research! Our research mission is the discovery of knowledge that will improve health for all people. We have been fortunate to recruit a distinguished faculty of scholars who focus investigations on issues related to health disparities, particularly for women and children. Currently our active programs of research include:
- HIV and violence prevention in underserved populations
- The cultural context of cancer care
- End-of-life palliative care
- Effects of exercise on cardiovascular health
- Prenatal programming of adult disease
- Muscle fatigue and aging
Research expertise in the School of Nursing spans a broad range of skills, from basic science to community-based research. Thus we are ideally positioned to address translational issues in health care. Our researchers hold internal and external funding from such agencies as NIH, DHHS, the American Heart Association, the University of Missouri Research Board, and UMKC Faculty Research Grants.
UMKC is one of fewer than 30 universities nationwide to have nursing, medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy education programs centrally located on one “Hospital Hill” campus. The School of Nursing along with the School of Pharmacy has recently moved to a new, state-of-the-art Health Sciences Building at the heart of the campus. School of Nursing faculty have established collaborations with researchers from the Schools of Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medicine and with clinical partners at Children’s Mercy Hospital and Truman Medical Center, also located on the Hospital Hill campus.
There are exciting opportunities ahead for faculty and students who become part of the UMKC School of Nursing research program. I invite you to learn more about us by exploring this website.
