Opportunities for Collaboration

Collaboration is at the heart of successful research programs. The interdisciplinary expertise represented on the UMKC School of Nursing research faculty is complemented by inter-departmental and inter-institutional collaborations across the campus. UMKC is one of fewer than 30 universities nationwide to have nursing, medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy education programs centrally located on one “Hospital Hill” campus.  The School of Nursing along with the School of Pharmacy has recently moved to a new, state-of-the-art Health Sciences Building at the heart of the campus.

School of Nursing faculty have established collaborations with researchers from the Schools of Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medicine and with clinical partners at Children’s Mercy Hospital and Truman Medical Center, also located on the Hospital Hill campus.

The School of Nursing has research partnerships extending nationwide. Community research collaborations also exist with the Kansas City school system and with area churches. Our faculty collaborates with St. Luke’s Hospital and the Mid American Heart Institute in the areas of neonatal health and adult cardiovascular disease. An exciting collaboration among the Schools of Nursing and Medicine has recently resulted in the formation of the Muscle Biology Research Group and has generated links with the UMKC Bone Biology Group, the Obesity and Osteoporosis Genetics group, St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute, Kansas University Exercise Physiology Lab and Kansas University Medical Center.

UMKC is a stakeholder institution in the Kansas City Area Life Life Sciences Institute which provides seed money to area researchers and actively champions life sciences research among contributors, legislators and the business community.
